Video: Documentary - Making a Difference in Science & Engineering (2006)

This 15-minute video documentary features Sigma Xi members describing the international honor society of science and engineering in their own words. The 10 short segments or modules that make up the documentary cover different aspects of the Society, providing an excellent overview of Sigma Xi's mission, programs and activities.

Available online and in a DVD format, the multi-purpose video is designed for prospective Sigma Xi members, new initiates, supporters and public audiences. It is ideal for showing at Sigma Xi meetings, induction ceremonies, public lectures, science fairs, career days and poster sessions.

The video can be played straight-through, or the modules can be played individually in any order preferred, depending on the audience. These links provide access to streaming video files encoded for the Windows Media Player as .wmv files.

Special Features
Additional special features include a brief History of the Society (1:44) and of American Scientist magazine (0:39). Of special interest is an interview with Thomas Eisner(9:05) at Cornell University, winner of the National Medal of Science and Sigma Xi's Procter Prize. Eisner talks about what his Sigma Xi Grant-in-Aid of Research meant to his career as one of the world's leading entomologists.

In another special feature Sharon Milgram at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill discusses the value of the landmark Sigma Xi Postdoc Survey (6:54), in which more than 7,600 postdocs at 46 American research institutions were asked about such issues as pay, working conditions, benefits and other factors. The survey was designed to improve the training and research environments for postdocs by providing a better understanding of their experiences.
