Sigma Xi Programs
Sigma Xi sponsors an array of programs and activities that support science and engineering. Many are administered directly through our more than 500 local chapters at colleges and universities, industry research centers and government laboratories. Some long-standing programs of the Society continue to be central to our overall mission. These include American Scientist magazine, the Grants-in-Aid of Research Program for student researchers, prestigious prizes and awards, the Distinguished Lectureships Program and our Critical Issues in Science series.
In conjunction with each annual meeting of the Society, Sigma Xi sponsors an International Research Conference, which highlights outstanding research by undergraduates and graduate students.
In addition, the portfolio of Sigma Xi programs includes newer offerings that capitalize on the Society's unique strengths and characteristics, such as our association with the WGBH Educational Foundation to promote the Science Café movement and our new Sigma Xi Affiliate Program. Grants from the National Science Foundation have supported the development of chapter-based programs in education and ethics. Sigma Xi also offers small grants to support education programs at the chapter level.
Partnerships with other organizations provide opportunities for our chapters to participate in mentoring networks and workshops, to name a few. Sigma Xi has joined with the Shodor Education Foundation to offer a week-long summer course called Engineer-in-Training for High School Students that explores engineering concepts and vocations. A grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation supported the landmark 2005 Sigma Xi Postdoc Survey, designed to improve the training and research environments for postdocs by better understanding their experiences.
Additionally, a growing number of Sigma Xi members outside of North America have formed chapters and sponsor exciting programs for our international members.
